In January 2004, thanks to support from our community, we headed to the World
Social Forum in Mumbai, India. This was the first World Social Forum (WSF) to
be hosted outside of Brazil and the fourth of its kind. The WSF hosted some 100,000
delegates from around the world. The Conference theme was centered around the
slogan “Another World is Possible”. The streets of the conference
grounds at The World Social Forum were filled with theater, vending booths, art
exhibits and music, while inside the conference tents, groups from around the
world hosted panel discussions, hundreds of workshops and dozens of films. We
were awestruck at the amazing synergy which was WSF!
The presence of the fair trade movement was at the conference was inspiring.
There were dozens of tables of producers, advocacy groups and retailers.
We talked with many different people from all over the world about their
involvement in the fair trade movement. We met garment workers from Bangladesh
who were taking a stand against sweatshops, groups fighting against child
labor on the streets in India and many more.
It was during this conference that we first met the women from our co-op and were excited to see thier beautiful designs and fabrics. Returning
to the States with some of their products, we received amazing feedback
from customers who were excited to see new fair trade fashions and hear
the stories about the women’s collective. Our relationship has blossomed from there. We hope you will also
enjoy our products - having met the women whose hands created them, we
feel deeply connected.
At Marigold we are working to make fair trade accesible to more people by providing clothes that fit well and are stunning in design. Through this line, we hope to make the decision to buy fair trade an easy one.
Thanks for supporting fair trade! -Beth Provo, owner
